The Commitments have stepped out of the West End to go on tour and they are currently at the Bournemouth Pavilion until Saturday 11 March 2023.  If you enjoy an energetic feel-good musical with amazing vocals then you’ll love it!

The Commitments is the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working class guy from Dublin who is passionate about music and decides to create a soul band from a bunch of amateur musicians and friends.  Rehearsals are very funny and there’s lots of disagreements but they improve and quickly have their first gig in the local community hall.

The entire cast are hugely talented but for me ‘Deco’ (Ian McIntosh) steals the show with his brilliant acting and power in his voice.  He’s a very cheeky (and often arrogant) chappy who knows his worth and by the end of the show he announces that he’s going solo and entering the Eurovision.

There’s over 20 soul classics from the 50’s and 60’s including Night Train, Try a Little Tenderness, In the Midnight Hour, Papa was a Rolling Stone and Mustang Sally.  Even if you’re not a big soul fan you’ll still find yourself quietly singing along and tapping your toes.  If you like a boogie then you’ll have your chance when they get you up for the finale!

You can’t help but leave the theatre with a smile on your face and a tune in your head.  We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and would recommend The Commitments to anyone who enjoys a trip to the theatre.
